Caring for Baby Teeth

children's dentist fayetteville ar

At Northwest Arkansas Family Dental, we welcome patients of all ages to our practice. We especially enjoy our smallest patients because we understand the importance of building great relationships with children so they can have future success at the dental office. We like to see children around their first birthday for their first dental checkup. Your premiere children's dentist in Fayetteville, AR discusses caring for baby teeth.

The First Visit

Our first visit with your child is mostly just spent acclimating them to our office and the instruments we use. We'll take a ride in the "big chair," count their teeth, and basically get an idea of what's going on with their oral development. As your child gets older we'll begin to clean their teeth and educate them about their oral health. The most important thing is that we'll keep every appointment fun and pleasant for your child. We encourage parents to bring their little ones to their own dental appointments so they can see that dental visits aren't scary.

Baby Teeth

You might wonder why it's so important to take care of your child's baby teeth when they'll be falling out in few years anyway. Baby teeth actually have a few jobs to do during their time in your child's mouth. First, they help your child learn the ins and outs of solid foods and how to eat them. They also help your child learn how to make sounds, form words, and speak. Probably their most important job is to hold space and guide adult teeth into place when it's time. So it is very important to start brushing your child's teeth as soon as they arrive and keep them as clean and healthy as possible.
