November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month
Alzheimer’s is one of the most heartbreaking conditions that a loved one can experience. November is Alzheimer’s awareness month, a time devoted to raising awareness in the hopes of finding a cure to this tragic disease.
A form of dementia characterized by memory loss, confusion, and behavioral changes, Alzheimer’s tends to gradually worsen over time. While a great amount of research had been dedicated to the topic, and some answers have been discovered, a cure is not yet available.
Many people are aware of the connection between periodontal disease and heart disease, but few know about the connection with other systemic conditions such as diabetes and Alzheimer’s. Recent research shows a link between periodontal disease and Alzheimer’s, though the relationship is not yet clear. Some research shows that Alzheimer’s progresses faster in patients who have inflammatory illnesses, such as periodontal disease.
While research is still underway to discover the relationship between our oral health and overall health, doctors agree that having healthy teeth and gums protects your overall health.
How to Prevent Periodontal Disease
The best way to prevent periodontal disease is by having outstanding home care that includes brushing your teeth at least twice daily and flossing at least once per day. Additionally, having a professional dental cleaning twice per year and regular exams with your dentist can protect your oral health, as well.
If you have symptoms of periodontal disease including bad breath, bleeding gums, pain when brushing or flossing, swollen gums, or tooth mobility, call our office to set up an evaluation. When we catch periodontal disease in its early stages, we can often reverse the symptoms and completely restore your dental health.
Most treatment for periodontal disease includes specialized dental cleanings, follow up treatments, and in some cases, site-specific treatments with an antibiotic.
