Your regular dental cleaning is more important to your oral health than you might first realize. Even if you brush and floss your teeth, you still need to have a professional cleaning every six months because tartar still develops in the places where your toothbrush and floss cannot reach.

What to Expect

Your dental cleaning in our Fayetteville dental office will provide you with an opportunity to update your medical history and medications, which can affect your oral health. This is a great time to share any changes you’ve recently noticed. Dry mouth, painful gums, and sensitivity are a few signs of an underlying issue.

During your dental cleaning, you may hear a series of numbers. This is your hygienist measuring your gums for pockets where bacteria can collect. Numbers like one, two, and three are all healthy numbers. Numbers like four, five, six, and beyond indicate the development of periodontal disease.

Your hygienist will move around your mouth from tooth to tooth cleaning tartar, food particles, and bacteria from your gums and teeth. During this process, the hygienist will look for signs of bleeding, which can indicate early gum disease.

Chances are that at least once per year, a dental assistant or our hygienist will take diagnostic images using digital dental x-rays to look for bone loss and decay. Dr. Wade Kifer will review the x-rays to rule out any conditions that require treatment. If he does identify a problem, he will let you know about it right away in addition to treatment options to improve your health.

Finally, your hygienist will polish your teeth. This removes small particles of tartar and surface stains that darken your teeth. You will walk out of our door with a clean, fresh smile that you can feel great about.
