What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal Disease | Fayetteville DentistPeriodontal disease by definition is a disease or infection in the periodontium. What that means is that you have some sort of infection in the structures that hold the teeth. This can be in the gums and/or the bone holding the teeth.

We try to be very aggressive when treating gum and bone disease because it is difficult and usually impossible to get the bone back after you have lost it. Proper treatment can include a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) or even gum surgery. Other treatment options may include antibiotics or laser therapy.

Proper home care is important to treat and prevent periodontal disease. There are different risk factors that make a person more susceptible to getting periodontal disease. Some of these risk factors include race, smoking, diabetes, and genetics. Some people have good oral hygiene and still develop periodontal disease. It is very important that you are checked thoroughly for periodontal disease by your dental professional.
