Dental anxiety affects millions of Americans but it’s not something we are born with, it’s a fear that people learn through a negative experience or because it is passed down by their parents Unfortunately, dental anxiety can keep people from seeking dental care they need to stay healthy, which has a negative impact on their overall health and may even impact self-confidence.

Avoiding dental anxiety when it comes to your kids involves just a few key points.

Start Early

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental appointment by their first birthday. This gives kids an opportunity to become familiar with the dental office early and that they have nothing to fear.

Don’t Use Negative Language

Even if dental visits are not your favorite part of your healthcare routine, avoiding negative language that could create fear in your child will stop the cycle of dental anxiety. Avoid words like hurt, shot, pain, and drill. We use gentle terminology and explain treatment to children in a non-threatening way that they can understand. We take the fear out of dentistry by letting kids work the suction and water while they take a ride in the chair.

Make it Exciting

Your child’s first dental appointment can be a celebration. You are welcome to take pictures and make it fun for your little one to sit in the chair. We make appointments comfortable and interactive, satisfying their naturally curious natures.

All of our youngest patients get to choose a prize from our toy chest after their appointment, giving them something to look forward to.
