It’s Christmas time, and we all know what that means! Lots of family, food, fun… and a LOT of extra sweets! We enjoy holiday treats as much as anyone, so we thought we’d give you some tips on keeping you smiling and your teeth healthy this holiday season.
Snacking throughout the day can lead to more tooth problems. Try to eat the extra treats at meal times, rather than munching throughout the day. When we eat, the sugars in our foods are broken down by the bacteria and turned into acid. It is the acid attack that causes the damage (decay) to our teeth. Grazing means that your teeth and gums are under constant attack!
Speaking of sugars, it is important to be aware of the less obvious sugars. Typically when we think of sugary foods, we think of candy, cake, pies, sodas, and other junk food. Remember that fresh and dried fruits, as well as fruit juices, breads and sauces can contain large amounts of sugar. Acidic foods and drinks, such as citrus juices and fruits, wine and sodas can be just as harmful to your teeth as sugary foods.
Brushing at least twice a day is crucial to maintaining oral health, however it is important to NOT brush immediately after eating acidic foods. For about an hour after eating, the enamel is softer. The abrasiveness of the toothpaste will cause more damage during that time. Instead, rinse with water and/or mouthwash (we recommend SmartMouth). You can also chew sugar free gum to help freshen breath.
“Say Cheese!!!” Cheese helps neutralize the pH in the mouth, thereby helping to prevent cavities. Even better, it doesn’t matter if it is regular, low fat or no fat, the oral health benefits remain the same! This makes cheese a great snack! And since we’re talking about Christmas, turkey is also good for oral health. Turkey, along with other high protein meats, are rich in phosphorous, which helps promote strong healthy teeth.
